Scientists have strong opinions about Dawkins' atheist approach; most of them bad.
We often hear from atheists how religion is dying out as mankind comes to see the clear light of reason. Atheist "intellectuals" speak disparagingly about religion and predict that mankind is on the cusp of a new age in which religion will simply disappear as science, technology and reason are in the ascendant. A few years ago, computer science whiz Chris Harrison created a beautiful visualization linking up every cross reference in the Bible. So, for example, if a verse in the New Testament referred back to a verse in the Old Testament, there was an arc drawn between the two chapters they were in (the vertical lines at the bottom represent the number of verses in that chapter): Amazing! If a person is to decide whether atheism can ever replace religion, that person must first decide what religion means to them. Growing up, I was turned off by a great deal of the dogma I heard coming from religious institutions and their acolytes: a reverence for blind faith over evidence, puritanical sexual hang-ups, insistences in codified bigotry that vilified gay people and subjugated women. That being my experience, I should hope with all my heart that atheism never becomes a religion.
Religion cannot and should not be replaced by atheism. Religion needs to go away and not be replaced by anything. Atheism is not a religion. It's the absence of religion, and that's a wonderful thing.
